Morning Announcements: A Daily Dose of Purpose and Positivity

Kadena Air Base, Okinawa – At Bechtel Elementary, morning announcements are far more than a routine – they are a cornerstone of school culture and character development.

These daily messages set a purposeful tone for the day, challenging students to make the world a better place with their choices. Each announcement blends inspiration, reflection, and practical wisdom, often anchored in quotes from figures like C.S. Lewis and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and always centered around values such as responsibility, kindness, and integrity.

The impact reaches far beyond the student body. Teachers use the announcements as writing prompts, discussion starters, and tools for reinforcing classroom expectations. Many adults have shared that the messages challenge and inspire them personally, proving that the values shared resonate across generations. Parents have expressed heartfelt appreciation, noting that their children are not only listening but internalizing the messages—striving to live with purpose and make thoughtful, responsible choices.

These announcements also give students a voice. By involving them in the process, Principal Tefft fosters a sense of ownership and belonging, reinforcing that every Bulldog contributes to the strength and spirit of the school. The first 20 minutes of the school day are critical, and these announcements ensure that time is used to build community, spark reflection, and promote a shared commitment to doing what’s right—even when it’s hard.

Morning announcements at Bechtel Elementary are a daily investment in character and connection. They remind every listener—young and old—that integrity matters, kindness counts, and each day is a new opportunity to make a difference.

Kindness

Good morning, Bechtel Elementary School!  Today is…

Here’s a question to start your day:
Have you ever noticed how a simple act of kindness can completely change someone’s mood? Maybe someone held the door for you, helped pick up your dropped papers, or just gave you a friendly smile or word of encouragement — and suddenly, your day felt a little brighter!  It made a positive, wonderful difference!  😊

That’s the amazing thing about kindness — it doesn’t have to be huge to make a big impact. Kindness in action means choosing to do something that helps, includes, adds value or encourages others. It’s not just thinking kind thoughts — it’s showing them through what you say and what you do.  😊

There’s a wonderful quote by Aesop, the ancient storyteller, who said:

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Every time you show kindness — whether it’s helping a friend, including someone who feels left out, or saying something kind and encouraging — you send out a ripple that touches everyone around you. One small act can spark another, and another…….and before you know it, kindness spreads through the whole school.

So today, Bulldogs, let’s take action.
Look for one opportunity — just one — to make someone’s day better. You’ll be surprised how great it makes you feel too.

Let’s fill our hearts…..and then our halls, and our classrooms with kindness in action today. I am certain it will help make the world a better place.  😊

Please stand for the pledge of allegiance.  Ready, Begin: I pledge allegiance to the flag…

Responsibility – Doing the Right Thing

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun and restful long weekend!  I hope all of you are ready for an amazing few days together. Let’s start today with a question:

Have you ever been in a situation where you knew the right thing to do… but it wasn’t the easiest thing to do? Maybe it was admitting you made a mistake, turning in an assignment on time even when you were tired, standing up for someone who needed a friend, or standing up to negative peer pressure… when you are alone.

That’s what responsibility is all about — doing what’s right, not because it is convenient, easy, or popular, but because IT IS THE RIGHT and RESPONSIBLE THING TO DO!

There’s a great quote by C.S. Lewis that says:

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. added some great wisdom when he said, "The time is always right to do what is right."

Being responsible means taking care of your work, your words, and your actions. It means keeping your promises, trying your best, and making choices that help, not hurt, others. When every Bulldog takes responsibility, our whole school becomes stronger, kinder, and more trustworthy….and the world becomes a much better place.

Please stand for the pledge of allegiance.  Ready, begin: I pledge allegiance…
