Bechtel’s Ocean Day Inspires Innovation and Collaboration

Okinawa, Japan – Bechtel Elementary School recently dove into an unforgettable learning adventure with Ocean STEAM Day, a schoolwide event that made science, technology, engineering, art, and math come alive through hands-on excitement.

Planned by AAPS teacher Jeanene Golden, the day blended creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork—celebrating both STEAM learning and our beautiful island home.

From the moment students stepped into the library, they were immersed in a vibrant underwater world. Stunning ocean artwork—created by Bechtel ES students and proudly displayed through a collaboration between Art Teacher, Karen Griffis and AAPS—lined the walls. These colorful creations showcased student talent while highlighting a theme that resonates deeply with our island community.

Throughout the day, students rotated through eight highly engaging stations featuring microscope explorations, math puzzles, STEAM building challenges, and creative art projects. The energy was electric. At each station, students used the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, build, test, and improve their ideas. Collaboration was at the heart of it all—teams of students shared strategies, encouraged one another, and celebrated successes big and small.

While Ocean STEAM Day was filled with joy, creativity, and wide-eyed wonder, it also strongly supported DoDEA’s MTSS framework and the Blueprint for Continuous Improvement. The event provided a robust universal learning experience—high-quality, standards-based enrichment accessible to every student. The hands-on challenges strengthened critical thinking, teamwork, and persistence, nurturing the resilience and well-being essential for academic success. The event itself was a celebration of shared leadership and the supportive school climate that defines the Bechtel Bulldog community.

Ocean STEAM Day also advanced student excellence by offering meaningful, real-world learning that prepares students for college, career, and life. Students practiced adaptability, communication, creativity, and collaboration—future-ready skills.  At the same time, the event supported school excellence by highlighting innovative instruction, teacher leadership, and a culture of continuous improvement. It was clear: when students and teachers learn side-by-side through interactive experiences, powerful things happen.

Ocean STEAM Day was more than a themed event—it was a celebration of learning, community, and the power of curiosity. By weaving together science, technology, engineering and art in meaningful ways, Bechtel continues to uphold its commitment to “making the world a better place every chance we get.”

It was a day of joy. A day of challenge. A day of discovery.  And a day when our Bulldogs truly made waves.
