FC Ryukyu player inspires Bechtel Elementary students during special visit
OKINAWA, Japan – More than 300 students in grades 1-5 filled the gymnasium at Bechtel Elementary School on Thursday, March 19 to hear from FC Ryukyu forward Cal Jennings. The American professional soccer player visited the school to speak about chasing goals, building confidence, and what it takes to compete at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Jennings opened his talk by sharing how his passion for soccer shaped his journey, encouraging students to believe in their own dreams and stay committed to their growth. He then led groups of students through hands-on soccer drills with the help of the team's whale shark mascot, Jinbe-nho, filling the gym with energy and excitement.
Drawing connections between his own career and the lives of military-connected students, Jennings spoke about adapting to new teams and new locations. He also answered student questions – including his favorite pro soccer players, his favorite Japanese foods, and how he stays confident on the field.
“I practice a lot,” Jennings said. “So, I’m good at what I do, and I spend a lot of time trying to improve different skills. If you want to be confident, you’ve got to practice. Secondly, I know that my identity isn’t tied to me being a soccer player. It’s what I do for a living, but whether I have a good or a bad game, I know that I still have a family that loves me.”
Bechtel Elementary School Principal Mr. Tefft said Jennings’ message resonated with students and staff alike.
“Opportunities like this help our students feel connected, inspired, and seen – no matter where in the world they are living,” said Bechtel Principal Scott Tefft.
