Bumpy Buggies race rolls into success at Bechtel Elementary
OKINAWA, Japan — Bechtel Elementary fifth graders recently put their creativity, engineering skills and perseverance to the test during the fifth annual Bumpy Buggies Challenge. Students designed and built vehicles using recycled and repurposed materials before racing them in a schoolwide competition.
While there were only a few winners on race day, students said the experience itself was the most valuable outcome.
“It was tough to make, but it all paid off in the end. It was a lot of fun. I loved it!” said fifth grade student Mastin.
Many students said they enjoyed seeing the creativity of their classmates. “I loved seeing everyone’s designs,” said Liam, while Whitney noted it was “really cool that they were all made out of recycled items.”
The challenge encouraged students to think about sustainability and innovation. “One man’s trash can be another man’s treasure,” said Gianna.
Other students emphasized the individuality of the projects and the shared sense of accomplishment. Several noted that each design reflected a unique approach, while others highlighted that the experience and collaboration were more meaningful than the outcome of the race.
The Bumpy Buggies Challenge provided an opportunity for students to apply STEM concepts, demonstrate creativity, practice problem-solving and develop skills that build perseverance.
